Where to start if you are new to this

Coffee cup reading is easier to learn than most divination traditions because there is nothing to memorise before you begin. You need a cup with unfiltered grounds in it, a saucer, and a few minutes of patience while the sediment dries. Everything else is a matter of looking carefully and knowing what the shapes have traditionally meant.

If you have never read a cup before, work in this order. Learn the mechanics first, which means how to brew the coffee so it leaves a readable sediment, how to turn the cup, and how long to wait before lifting it. Then learn to divide the cup into zones, because position changes meaning more than beginners expect: the rim reads as the near future, the base as the distant future, the right of the handle as what is arriving and the left as what is leaving. Only after that does the symbol vocabulary become useful.

The single habit that separates a good reading from a bad one is describing before interpreting. Say out loud what you actually see, a long streak, a clump near the rim, a clear patch at the base, before you reach for what any of it means. Readers who skip that step tend to find whatever they were already hoping for.

What you will find here

These articles cover the practical side of the craft, brewing and turning the cup, reading positions and timing, the meanings of individual symbols, and the history of how tasseography travelled from Ottoman coffee houses into kitchens across the Mediterranean, the Balkans and North Africa. Some are step-by-step guides you can follow with a cup in front of you; others are background reading on where these meanings came from.

For looking up a specific shape, the symbol dictionary is faster than the blog, and each entry explains the variations and combinations for that shape. If you want the whole tradition explained in one place, start with our guide to coffee cup reading or the Turkish kahve falı method.
